Corporate Responsibility

Health & Safety

With our mobile service delivery and provision of services direct to the customer's premises, our focus is both on health and safety for our employees and customers. Here, the company has the following challenges:

  1. Management of occupational road risk – stemming from the usage of our transport fleet.
  2. Reduction of slips, trips and falls – due to staff working on customers' premises.
  3. Management of hazards from moving machinery – mainly from textiles processing plants.
  4. Effective management co-ordination of health and safety with our customers.

In 1999, the board of Rentokil Initial adopted a central Health and Safety Policy. The Health and Safety Policy requires all businesses worldwide to implement an effective health and safety management system and to meet the company's 14 Health and Safety Management Standards. These standards are available to download through the drop-down menu above.

The 14 Health and Safety Management Standards incorporate current international guidance for the successful management of health and safety. The standards set rigorous requirements for our businesses in five key areas: policy and organisation, safe working procedures, competent people, management control and review, and improvement. In effect, they ensure that each business maintains a management system which identifies the responsibilities of all managers and details the arrangements both for the control of hazards which could arise from the activities of their operations and the communication of health and safety matters with employees and customers. The standards also include arrangements for monitoring and reviewing performance, not only to comply with legal requirements but also to secure progressive improvements.

Businesses are audited regularly against the requirements by our health, safety and environment team. Audits typically last between one and two days, and, on completion, the auditor will present the findings to the relevant business manager and compile a report for senior management. When a business meets all of the basic requirements, it is awarded a 'Certificate of Conformity'. When businesses meet all the basic requirements and advanced recommendations they are awarded a 'Certificate of Excellence'. Audit results are reported to the main board every six months.

Good practice in health and safety is further promoted by R&D through the provision of working manuals and procedures, the circulation of information on current issues and/or the issue of mandatory instructions, as appropriate to the business. In the area of Pest Control, for example, the company has developed 'Pink Notes', which help standardise company rules on pest control, remove uncertainty over what is permitted and prohibited and make information readily accessible throughout the operation. Pink Notes cover many of the policy issues, including 'Pesticide disposal', 'Rodent Baits', 'Phosphine Safety Masks' and 'Risk Assessment'. Each Pink Note gives a key operational instruction, together with a brief explanation of the policy stance.

Externally, we provide the public access to a large library of relevant information via the Research and Development web site (http://www.ri-research.com/). This comprehensive resource supplies a wealth of details on pest control, tropical plants, hygiene, security and technical information. The site also hosts information on innovations and services, as well as Safety Data Sheets for specific products.

To promote discussion of health and safety matters, the company holds annual seminars for health and safety managers from the UK and international businesses. These seminars last two days and provide managers with updates on topical issues and examples of best practice to take back to their own businesses.
